Poor execution, not poor tactics
Once again we were passing the ball around slowly as if we had all the time in the world. Against a packed defence m the ball needs to be moved swiftly or the defence can just reset. We will be playing on a big pitch in the new stadium and we must larn to take advantage of the hols that quick passing can create.
Ambling around and taking our time to see a pass, let alone play the pass with the speed it requires is evident again and again in our games. It is something the players don't seem to realise and don't address. How are you going to move a side out of position if you pass the ball at a snails pace?
The suggestion we were playing the wrong tactics and someone complaining we didn't have a left-back, which as the game showed, we didn't need, is in my view wrong itself. There was nothing wrong with our tactics, just the execution of them. As I say, the ball was simply moved too slow, in injury time Eriksen quite happily gently rolled the ball square with an exaggerated follow through of his leg and Sanchez I believe it was, had to wait for the ball to arrive. That was us being urgent!
Eric Dier saw several great through balls, but his execution of the pass was woeful, they were all overhit it seems. Many of our shots players were leaning back and simply blasted over the bar.
A frustrating day at the office after a European night. Should we have brought more fresh legs on earlier, as opposed to playing more tired legs from the off.
