Loser leader of the Hungarian Socialists

A new poll from Hungary has revealed that Socialism is practically dead in the Central European nation, with the main Socialist Party dropping to less than 10% support among voters. At the last election it got around 25% of the vote. The next election will be held in spring next year.

The Hungarian Socialist Party (Hungarian: Magyar Szocialista Párt) was a successor of the old Communist Party that ran the country in the period of Soviet and KGB dominance (1945-1989). Surprisingly, after the fall of Communism, it managed to rebuild itself into a major electoral force, getting over 40% of the vote in some elections, and even forming coalition governments. But in recent years it has been in sharp decline.

One reason for this has been the success of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's civic nationalist Fidesz Party, but another reason is that the nationalist Jobbik Party has repositioned itself as a "Third Force" movement, beyond conventional left-right politics. This has allowed it to steal some of the more sensible and popular socialist policies and thus eat into the support of the increasingly moribund Socialists.

The poll was carried out by pollster Medián between September 15 and 20. Counting decided voters, the full results of the poll were as follows:

FIDESZ 55%
Jobbik 16%
Socialists 9%
Greens 7%
DK (also Leftists) 5%
Others 8%
