Malcom is waiting on a move to Inter Milan as his frst choice destination |
Transfer Talk
Twitter is rife with fans complain or voicing their frustration that Tottenham have not made any signings yet, usually without thinking or attempting to understand the situation. While other clubs can throw wages and signing on fees at players and their agents, Spurs can not, they have to remain within what we can afford, albeit greater wages than before.
Malcom is a case in point this transfer window. We know Pochettino has made phone calls to him, we know Tottenham want to sign him, but he wants to wait for Inter Milan.
Inter Milan and Bordeaux have not agreed on a fee and just because the two sides can't doesn't mean he goes off and signs for someone else. Presumably, we are his second choice, he certainly does not have an agreement with Everton as is being falsely claimed in certain quarters according to the Italian media.
Malcom is thus waiting, while Inter wait to put time pressure on Bordeaux to reduce their terms.
Should Tottenham wait for their first choice, in other words, be brave as Pochettino suggested or do you go for a lesser alternative?
Equally, he might not be our first choice. Anthony Martial might be the number one target for the wide attacker role. Manchester United (Ed Woodward) did not want to sell to us, Mourinho didn't mind. No deal has been reached as a result, although the player wants to come to Spurs.
Again, do we abandon our first choice or do we be brave and take it to the wire?
Is doing this backing Pochettino? Well if Martial is his first choice and we are doing everything all window to secure him, then yes he is being supported, but that won't stop the anti-Levy people shouting he isn't being backed. Their criteria is different than the clubs criteria or even Pochettino'scriteria.
While we have our first choices, we will also have already negotiated the basics of second choices or even third, who will all know the situation and have a decision to make themselves how long they wait to see if we can get our first choices.
It depends if we offer a better opportunity than other clubs who are interested in them offer. For instance, a player would perhaps want to wait for us and Champions League football, than prematurely sign for Everton, Arsenal or West Ham United who don't have Champions League to offer.
Those shouting for signings or a signing are in fact shouting to go after third or fourth choices, they will no doubt complain if they are not household names or what they would deem a first choice.
Fans want it both ways.
Window shuts for purchases 7 Aug, that's the only day that matters.
Players can be sold after that and if you were a buying club, why would you buy before then, when you can force clubs to sell players cheap, as they have to get them off the books.
We can only have 17 non-homegrown players in our named Premier League squad, we already have 17. We need to sell or loan out if we can't. Other clubs know we can't sign until we do or if we do that we have no option but to sell once the buying window shuts (it doesn't shut for European clubs).
They can simply wait and offer a low fee after 7 Aug.
This is not a simple window to do business in, especially as we have also had a World Cup in the way.
